Vintage Miami Lodge #948 Flag Day Program

In 1929 the officers of Miami Lodge #948 held the Flag Day ceremony at Bayfront Park with Exalted Ruler John Cavanagh presiding. The songs from the ceremony included Memories of the War, Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, The Boy are Marching, John Brown's Body, Carry Me Back to Old Virginia, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, Our Flag is There, Marching Through Georgia, The Battle Cry of Freedom, Massa's in the Cold, Cold Ground and The Arkansas Traveler.

Here is the original program I bought on Ebay. It starting to disintegrate and the staples rusted away but it's still readable. It will make an excellent addition to the lodge time capsule.

State President's Visitation and Event Schedule

Since the current State President, Joe Ortiz, is from our district, it's important to show our support. Here's all the stuff that's happening over the next year. Click on the document to view it larger but if the print is still a little too small to read, you can also find this information on the Florida State Elks website, then click on 2008-09 State President's Schedule in the left column toward the bottom.

Joe's homecoming will be held at our lodge in February 21, 2009 and the organizing committee would welcome volunteers. Contact Milton Muller if you'd like to help out.

CHARITY - The Best Performer

The Talent & Variety Show held Saturday June 14th in The Lodge's Crystal Room was an overwhelming success !! Verified ticket counts indicate that over 240 were in attendance to witness performances that ranged from amateur to professional. Over 20 acts were introduced by Master of Ceremony Mike "The Mad Hatter" Myers.

From the crazy antics of The Chippendales to "Dancing with the Stars" type performances by The Tango & Flamenco Dancers, The Unknown Comic & his side kick Sad Sack, The Reversable Dolly & Kenny singing duet, Diana & The Supremes, the incredible voices of Walter (from Italy) & Walter Cordle (think Sinatra) plus many more added to an evening of surprises & standing ovations.

But it was Charity who was the best performer. Every dollar from every ticket sold was contributed to The Lodge's Charity Fund. An amount that will exceed $1100.00 ! A huge THANK YOU ! to those who attended.

All of this could not have happened without the hard work & dedication of the show's director Nivia Myers Chairman of the Activities Committee, & it's members & to all of the show's participants, another "Thank You !" is in order.

Members our lodge has now started the process of establishing the weekly event of (weekly Bingo) to be held on Thursday's in our bar area. This will be done on a weekly basis as we continue to grow the activities offered to our members inside our lodge. We also have added and introduced "Pull Tabs" which is a machine that will allow members to play for different jackpot amounts with payoffs which is located adjacent to the popcorn machine. Members keep in mind that the revenue generated from both Bingo and the Pull Tabs by law must be given and used strictly for "Charity". I would like to comment that we will also be hosting our annual Casino Night on the 13th of September 2008 which is being Chaired by Pat Erice. The 14th of June will be an exciting time as the officers of Miami Lodge # 948 will perform the Flag Ritual Ceremony to be held pool side starting at 4:00 p.m. with the assistance of our sponsored Boy Scout Troop. Keep in mind that following that ceremony there will be dinner in the form of Cuban Food and then will be followed by our Talent Show which is being planned and hosted by our Activities Chairperson Nivia Myers.

Members please keep your eyes opened as we now plan and set our sights to the annual 4th of July Picnic and other activities that will be announced for the remainder of the Elk Year and a visit by our State President Joe Ortiz in the month of Febuary 2009.

Thanks again,
