Grand Lodge Advisory Committee Proposals For Passage At the Phoenix Grand Lodge Session, July, 2011

(A variety of changes - some requiring Statutory Changes – others not!)

At their recent annual meeting the GL Advisory Committee has approved the following issues for some changes in our Order wherein the Committee on Judiciary and Advisory Committee on Laws must now prepare and distribute these proposals for the delegates at Phoenix, July 2011. It is hoped that a set of proper proposals will reach the Lodges in sufficient time for them to review prior to the Convention.

Time may not allow these proposals to be properly disseminated between now and then. There may be other proposals added to the growing list of new legislative issues as it comes time and place for voting in July, 2011.

The Advisory Committee is asking that everyone keep an open mind and positive mindset that some changes MUST be made for the Good of the Order. Some may not require any change in the present Laws of the Order and some will require Statute changes!

Grand Lodge:

1. Change the name of the Grand Lodge to “National Lodge” (Passed & effective 2011)

2. Modernize titles of “National Lodge” Officers: (Passed & effective 2012)

· National President from Grand Exalted Ruler

· National Vice President from Endorsed Candidate for GER. (Elected National Vice President will be elected a year earlier and will automatically become National President the following GL year.)

· Sergeant At Arms replaces Grand Esquire, Grand Inner Guard and Grand Tiler.

· National Chaplain from Grand Chaplain.

· National Trustee(s) from GL Trustee(s).

3. Eliminate Elks Training Program (annual review of Statutes) (Passed & effective 2011)

4. Eliminate Membership Benefits Program. (Effective when present contract expires)

5. Eliminate the printing of GER Acceptance Speech for audience opening night and not in the daily Convention newsletter. The Elks Magazine will keep it in a later issue. (Passed and effective 2011)

6. Eliminate the spouses’ entertainment on Tuesday morning. (Passed & effective 2011)

7. Eliminate the “bull pen” roped off area for PGERs at the Exalted Ruler Ball on Wednesday evening of the Convention. Attending PGERs will still be introduced. (Passed & effective 2011)

8. Eliminate all “Honorable” titles for all Grand Lodge Officers. (Passed & effective 2011)

9. Sunday evening GER Dinner to start at 4:00 PM until completion (approximately 6-6:30pm, thus allowing for State Associations to conduct Sunday evening parties. (Passed & effective 2012)

10. Restructure Grand Lodge Committees as follows: (Passed & effective 2012)

13. More Meetings by Grand Lodge will be by electronic (along this line, teleconferencing is being considered where it may be practical in costs) (Passed & effective 2011)

14. After February 2012, the February GL Advisory meetings and Grand Trustees Meetings will be held in Chicago Headquarters without spouses attending. (Passed & effective 2012)

15. Amend Statutes to provide where Lodges may collect dues annually or semi-annually. (Passed & effective 2011)

16. Remove all references to Communist party. (Passed & effective 2011)

17. Repeat Accident Prevention State Chairpersons attend their national seminar every other year. (Passed & effective 2011)

18. Standard Elk Stationary for all. Personalizing is okay. (Passed & effective 2011)

19. Create an Elks Web Leadership School on internet for access by Elks in local Lodges. (Passed & effective TBD)

20. Allow Local Lodges (optional), by By-Law, to collect dues and be credited and/or grant other suitable rewards for members who recruit other members that remain “paid up” member for one full year, plus. (Passed & effective 2011)

21. Reduce the GL convention by one full day. (Passed & effective dependent upon hotel contracts-TBD)

22. For Phoenix - For Committee Chairpersons to have their written reports to be published on the Web site. Chairperson introduces the Committee members and thanks Lodges for their support and participation. All awards will be published in the Daily Convention newsletter and received at the booth. On Tuesday morning the majority of the Session will be devoted to the discussions of aspects, presented by the Future of Elkdom Committee and approved by the Grand Lodge Advisory for the Lodges and their representatives. (Passed & approved for Phoenix Convention)

23. Grand Lodge personnel spouses may wait until the weekend of the actual Convention beginning to come and attend the Convention. (Passed & optional by Ladies)

Changes affecting the DDGER:

1. No longer required for the DDGER to witness and grade the Initiatory Ritual at the official Lodge visit made by the DDGER. DDGER Report still sent. No GER response will be made. State Sponsor may still comment and make recommendations to the Lodge. (Passed & effective 2011)

2. DDGER will no longer receive Business Cards and is no longer an allowed expense by DDGER. (Passed & effective 2011)

3. Will no longer conduct a January DDGER Clinic. (Passed & effective 2012)

4. No longer DDGER Indoctrination in Chicago. All DD Indoctrination would be arranged by State Sponsor within the State. Budget funds for the State Sponsor’s indoctrination would be applicably made for DD Designates. (Passed & effective 2012) Apparently DD would no longer attend Grand Lodge Session!

5. Lodge Officer memorization of the Ritual parts would no longer be required. (Passed & effective 2012)

Subordinate Lodge:

1. Change the Name of “Subordinate Lodge” to “Local Lodge.” (Passed & effective 2011)

2. Lodge Meeting may be held once per month, or more often at the Lodge decision (Lodge altar already be set up and remains set up as the ER closes the Lodge)

3. The Local Lodge may opt to shorten the Lodge Opening & Closing rituals by By-Law Change.

4. Local Lodge change in Officer titles:(Passed & effective 2012)

President -- from Exalted Ruler

1st Vice President -- from Esteemed Leading Knight

2nd Vice President -- from Esteemed Loyal Knight

3rd Vice President -- from Esteemed Lecturing Knight

Sergeant at Arms -- from Lodge Esquire, Inner Guard & Tiler

Secretary -- from Lodge Secretary & Treasurer combined

Trustee(s) -- retain name of Trustee(s) & one of who would be signatory on checks & provide for paper trail

5. Allow for one community program to be solely identified as the Elks sponsored Lodge in each community. This would answer the question in the Community as to what the Elks are known for in that community. (Passed & effective 2011)

Suggestions made by Future of Elkdom Committee where NO Legislation is required:

1. Local Lodges are encouraged to make facilities available for use by civic groups so long as all laws are obeyed. (Passed & effective 2011)

2. Local Lodges establish Mentoring Program for Lodge Officers. (Passed & effective 2011)

3. If not already existing, local Lodges to establish an Activities/Entertainment Committee. (Passed & effective 2011)

4. A New Member Welcoming Committee for Local Lodges is seriously recommended. (Passed & effective 2011)

5. Installation and use of electronic games (i.e.; Wi-Fi) and other games in Game Room of Local Lodges (for members and children) (Passed & effective 2011)

6. Place the Membership application on the GL Web site. (Passed & effective 2011) (This would be a Grand Lodge action)

7. Create a suggested format for State Association’s meetings and conventions with emphasis on less reporting and more training of Elks. (Passed & effective 2011)

8. Suggested dress code for GL Advisory Committee after Sunday be optional for business casual. (Passed & effective 2011)

Meet and greet the Presidential Party at the Holiday Inn Express on Kendall Drive, then head up to North Miami for dinner. Kim Bankston will play during and after dinner. Tropical casual - no shorts or t-shirts.

Saturday, August 28

Start the day off with a little culture by visiting the Lowe Museum on the University of Miami campus, then it's on to the South Miami Lodge for lunch. Casual attire.

After a brief rest in the late afternoon, the festivities will resume at 948 with an old-fashioned USO dance. This one is either cocktail attire or military dress.

Happy Birthday 948 !!

On July 13th, 1905, a Thursday, 22 citizens of what was then slightly more than a jungle outpost on the edge of the bay took an oath to become members of The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, thus the beginning of Miami Lodge 948. William Mark Brown, Miami's 1st banker, was installed as it's 1st Exalted Ruler (his presence still exists in The Lodge Room) . The city's leaders declared that "the Elks will be influential and beneficial to the city". It goes without saying that indeed Miami Elks Lodge 948 has proven to be just that. It makes you feel good to be a member !

FSEA President Como's Visit to the South District

We were honored to welcome FSEA President, Vincent Como, his wife Lisa, VPAL James Hurst, his wife Julia and the entire Presidential Entourage last Friday. Since the Saturday morning activity was a visit to Jungle Island, we had a Welcome to the Jungle banquet Friday night. The event, I'm sorry to say, was not without issues. The worst thing that happened was that people did not wait until the dignitaries were allowed to go first before getting in line for food. I will take responsibility for this unfortunate gaffe because I did not anticipate having to tell the servers to hold off until the Presidential party went first. I really thought that since the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance are always done first at Elk functions, it would be a given that no one would line up for food until after that. We also had problems with the amount of food and several people complained about the set up.

Please know this - any event I am involved in planning in the future will be a seated dinner. It is just too problematic to have the serving stations and it was very unfortunate timing that our experiment with a new format happened at the President's Visitation. That said, the Presidential Party was extremely gracious about the whole thing. Both Vince and Lisa sloughed off my apology and told me they didn't care a bit about standing in line. (Although I felt terrible - and still do.) All we can do is make sure it runs more smoothly next time.

On a happier note, I want to thank everyone who came to help transform the Crystal Room into a jungle: Jane Walker, Jack & Lina Lopez, Jeff Muehlfeld, Glenn Tekerman and Scott Albert. Everyone worked really hard to make it happen and I appreciate their efforts.

Last Sunday several 948 members attended the Florida Keys Lodge installation where Chip DeClue was installed as Exalted Ruler. You may remember him from the recent State President's visitation at the North Miami Lodge... he's the one sang When the Squirrel Went Beserk at karaoke night.

After the ceremony we stuck around for a very filling dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, rolls, salad and chocolate fudge. (No, we did not count calories.)

Members all,

One of the most endearing events of Major League Baseball’s All-Star Break is the old timer’s game, where retired baseball greats have the opportunity to relive some of their past glory as standouts on the diamond in front of a crowd of cheering spectators.

The Lodge has the same sort of endearing event every year, only we call it PER night, where Past Exalted Rulers get the opportunity to run a meeting again. Like the old timers baseball team, we aren’t as polished as we used to be, but we’re every bit as enthusiastic about our performance on the field, better known as the Lodge room. And we’re all still proud to have been Exalted Rulers of Miami Lodge #948.

So come on out this Wednesday, March 4th, and see history in action as the PER’s of Miami Lodge #948 take the floor of the Lodge room once again to conduct what is sure to be a very interesting meeting.

Ladies Luncheon at 948 - hats, make-up and vintage fashion

On Saturday, February 21, we entertained the ladies from the Presidential Party with a Ladies Luncheon at 948. We brought in the fabulous Frank Ricigliano to do make-up for Rita and Lisa (the First Lady and the Vice President's wife) and raffled off a third session with the proceeds going to the Harry Anna fund. Rose Lanza won that. All three ladies left looking glamorous and ready for the evening event.

After Frank made-up Rita and demonstrated his technique, lunch was served while he worked on Lisa. We had a salad trio of chicken, crab and tuna. As soon as lunch was over it was time for the vintage fashion show. Our young volunteers modeled six vintage outfits as Dolores Leach read a narrative that recreated what MIGHT have happened back in the late 60's when Rita and Joe met at Miami-Dade college, fell in love and made plans to get married. (We did include a disclaimer that our story did not in any way reflect actual events or the views of the Presidential Party - wink, wink.)

Frank finished up with Rose Lanza, our raffle winner and the ladies went home to rest a bit before the Carribean Flair dinner. Here are some pictures from the day.

There are a couple of changes to the usual routine at the lodge this month. The dining room is no longer serving dinner on meeting nights - in fact, the kitchen is closed so grab a bite before you come to the lodge if you're hungry. Also this month, initiation will be held next week - Wednesday, February 11.

Don't forget to do two important things before it's too late: buy your tickets for the Sweetheart Ball (the deadline is Wednesday, the 11th) and make your reservations for the State President's visit on the weekend of February 20. (The deadline is Thursday, the 12th.) Both events promise to be a good time.

The one thing that compelled me to join the Elks was the incredible sense of patriotism that presides amongst the members. It humbles me and it inspires me. I am new here, and I know I need to pull my weight. I am starting with this blog and perhaps we can get to know eachother. In a short while I will share with you some ideas I have. They involve music, guitars, veterans, and some amazing members at the lodge who have really served our local and national community honorably. I hope you enjoy the music! The Children's Holiday Party was held on December 20. Oscar Erice, our Esteemed Loyal Knight was in charge and many of our members helped with this event, including Nivia Myers and the lodge Activities Committee. Here's the 948 contingent from the DD Visitation at the Florida Keys Lodge in Tavenier today. They served up an excellent dinner of pulled pork, smoked chicken, beans & rice and plantains. In the picture: Mary McArthur and her daughter, ER Milton Muller, Leading Knight Bill Henderson, Lodge Secretary Ginger DiCristafaro, Jeff Muehlfeld and Janis Taylor.

For anyone who is interested, their lodge will be serving brunch outside by the water on November 30 from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Bob Rankin reminded everyone to support the President's Homecoming activities on February 20 in North Miami and on February 21 at 948.

According to all who attended, the Veterans Honor Party was a fabulous affair. The chow line SOS and sloppy joes were good, the ballroom was packed with a standing-room-only audience and the speeches and stories were a moving tribute to our 948 Veterans. We'd like to thank Nivia for having the idea and pulling all of this together. She'd be the first person to point out that it took teamwork to make it all come together - and many people helped - but Nivia was the driving force of this event and it was such a great idea. Here are a few pictures she sent. We should have more coming soon from Glenn.

It was an evening of tears and fond farewells as we said good-bye to Maria Subires who is leaving the lodge after 10 years of employment. Maria, we will miss your smiling face at the bar and we all wish you the best of luck with your new endeavor. A message from Nivia Myers:

The Veterans Honor Celebration will be November 15 from 7:30 to midnight. It will be a great honor to have so many wonderful and patriotic men and women among us. Please come and help honor our 948 Veterans. Come to see what they looked like, what they did, where they served, how much they sacrificed for you and me. We will have a special speaker from the Miami Dade Country Mayor's Office, a slide presentation, the real uniforms worn by our members in war, not to mention the amazing music that will be played all night long by Earthshine.

We will be glad to provide food for you - SOS (made with hamburger) and sloppy joes, salads, rice, beans, bread and soda all done military style for your enjoyment. Food will be served ONLY from 5-7 pm. Make sure that you come early enough to eat and be ready to be seated in time for the ceremony in the crystal room. When you buy your tickets, ask for a program.

Non-veterans and guests will pay only $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door.

ALL OF OUR MIAMI ELKS VETERANS FROM #948 WILL EAT AND ENJOY THE NIGHT FOR FREE.

Make sure to call for reservations. Invite your friends, your family, your children. Let them come and experience a piece of history and let them see firsthand what our freedom really means.

Plan to attend the VP and DD Visitation on October 4th

Our lodge is hosting District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Bob Maxey and South District Vice President Bob Rankin on Saturday, October 4th. There will be a short meeting at 2:45 with Opening, Closing and Initiation but no business will be transacted. Elks and non-Elks are welcome. A social hour will follow the meeting, then dinner will be served at 5:30. Dinner is free but you must sign up in advance or call the lodge at 305-270-8283 to make your reservation.

Note: if you would like to place an ad in the Charity Ball Journal this year and would like to have your picture taken, our resident volunteer photographer, Glenn Tekerman will be on hand for this event. It's the perfect opportunity to come and support the lodge and arrange for a photo op at the same time. You don't even have to notify Glenn in advance; just show up looking pretty and he'll do the rest. :-)

We visited the SF Elks Lodge #3 today, which turned out to be a short walk from our hotel. It occupies the third floor of the Kensington Park Hotel at 450 Post Street - just steps away from Union Square.

Discovery of JOD unearths a Bounty of Beans

Well it finally happened ! That sneaky old Jack of Diamonds was discovered on Thursday, August 14th by good member Christine who picked envelope #14 (a coincidence ?) & collected a boatload of beans. Christine became an Elk 5 months ago & has been participating in our Thursday event ever since. She told everyone in the crowded Lounge that the beans will pay for her new hurricane shutters. Congradulations Christine !!!.

A fresh new game of Jack of Diamonds will start Thursday, September 4th. The drawings are always at 9:00PM sharp !!. The cost is $5 per week, paid monthly. See Ella Mae to enter.

Last Saturday Kathy Beers spent a little time in the lounge saying good-bye to everyone before she left for Inverness on Sunday. She was serenaded by a merry band of guys who came up with a special song just for her and we all wish her well as she starts this new chapter of her life. The lodge is just not going to be the same without you, Kathy.

Oh yeah - she did send an email saying that she has a guest room so look her up some time!

DD and VP Visitation at South Miami

We had a great time at the DD and VP Visitation at the South Miami Lodge on Saturday. Dinner was pork with new potatoes and veggies and chocolate cake for dessert. The Biehler boys (sons of Inner Guard Jefry Biehler and his wife Paula) were drafted into service to help with the dinner and they did a fabulous job. They served up the food very professionally and even rolled up their sleeves and washed dishes after the event.

Bob Rankin and Bob Maxey spoke after dinner. Both congratulated Annabelle, who was initiated earlier in the day, on becoming a member of the lodge and stressed that new members are the lifeblood of the lodge. Congratulations, Annabelle! We're happy to welcome you into Elkdom.

Charity Ball planning meeting

C'mon over to the lodge on Tuesday, July 22 at 7:30 if you'd like to be a part of this year's Charity Ball committee. The theme is going to be New York, New York and the ball will be on November 1st. This the biggest fundraising event of the year for our lodge and it takes many volunteers to make it a success. You can also lend support by placing a personal ad in the journal. You can submit your own ad or send me a picture and I'll do the design work for you. We can even arrange for our volunteer photographer to come to the lodge and take a picture if you don't have one readily available. 4th of July at the lodge

The organizing committee led by Bob and Barbara Gill, the Elkettes, Nivia and many other volunteers helped to make the 4th of July celebration an unqualified success. The Elkette's annual cake auction raised over $400 (thanks to Bob Gill's auctioneering skills), the tables were heaped with covered dishes of all types and the person in charge of the watermelon eating contest did a fine job of loading up those melons with vodka. Here are just a few pictures from the day. If anyone else has any to share, please send them them along and we'll post 'em!

Vintage Miami Lodge #948 Flag Day Program

In 1929 the officers of Miami Lodge #948 held the Flag Day ceremony at Bayfront Park with Exalted Ruler John Cavanagh presiding. The songs from the ceremony included Memories of the War, Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, The Boy are Marching, John Brown's Body, Carry Me Back to Old Virginia, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, Our Flag is There, Marching Through Georgia, The Battle Cry of Freedom, Massa's in the Cold, Cold Ground and The Arkansas Traveler.

Here is the original program I bought on Ebay. It starting to disintegrate and the staples rusted away but it's still readable. It will make an excellent addition to the lodge time capsule.

The Lodge's annual 4th of July Holiday Party will have a new twist this year.

The sponsoring PER's are asking each family to bring a Covered Dish for everyone to enjoy. For example, potato or macaroni salad, cole slaw, chili, casseroles, appetizers etc etc.

The Lodge's Volunteers will be grilling Hamburgers & Hot Dogs (on our brand new outdoor grill), + Baked Beans, Corn on the Cobb & Watermelon will be provided. All for a nominal fee of $6.00 p/p.

DRAFT BEER specials too !!

4th of July Festivities start @4:00PM.

The Lounge will open @ 11:00AM. Close: ???

Scheduled holiday events:
Watermelon Eating Contest, Elkette Cake Auction (for Charity), Flag Burining Ceremony by Boy Scout Troop 22, Karaoke & many more.

Friday's Dining Room Menu will be served during regular Friday hours. (5:00 to 10:00 PM)

President's Visit to the South Southeast District

The Oakland Park lodge hosted Joe and Rita Ortiz for the State President's Visit on Saturday, June 21st at the Southwest Broward lodge. They served up prime rib and a treasure box cake and everyone enjoyed the evening.
